description
This café au lait bowl has a neat and beautiful form. On the back are the words "ST AMAND HAMAGE" and the letters "RD," which suggest "NORD," although they are blurred. The signature dates to the late 1800s or early 1900s, but the texture of the base and glaze indicates that it was made in the 1900s. The Saint-Amand company established a kiln in Saint-Amand-les-Eaux in northern France in the early 18th century. Amidst changing ownership, many pottery factories were set up from the late 19th century to before World War I. Still, all were closed by the mid-20th century, probably due to the historical background. It is with mixed feelings that I consider the historical background of the era in which even potteries with long histories had to leave without mercy. Still, I feel even more attached to the pottery when I think it was made during the company's most prosperous period. The café au lait bowl is relatively small, but overall it is in good condition and is a gem to be enjoyed for daily use.
